A client texted me on a Monday morning.
Five words.
“I didn’t start over today.”
I had to stop what I was doing and read it again.
To anyone else, that’s probably the most boring text imaginable.
To him, it was one of the biggest wins he’d had in over a decade.
Let me explain.
He was 45 years old and had spent almost 15 years trying to lose weight.
His life followed the exact same pattern every week.
Monday through Friday he’d be perfect.
He’d meal prep.
Track every calorie.
Hit every workout.
Then the weekend would come.
Dinner out.
A few drinks.
A missed workout.
By Sunday night he’d convince himself he’d ruined everything.
Monday wasn’t another day.
Monday was another restart.
When he came to us, he wasn’t struggling because he didn’t know what to do.
He was stuck in an all-or-nothing cycle.
One off-plan meal meant the whole day was ruined.
One missed workout meant the week was a failure.
Every Monday felt like Day 1… again.
The fitness industry had spent years reinforcing that pattern.
“Just get back on track.”
“Be more disciplined.”
“Try harder next week.”
Here’s what was actually happening.
He wasn’t failing because of the weekend.
He was failing because he believed the weekend meant he’d failed.
There’s a difference.
Nobody had ever pointed that out to him.
So we did something that made him incredibly uncomfortable.
We stopped chasing perfect.
Instead of trying to win every meal, we focused on winning every week.
Instead of “starting over” after one bad decision, we practiced making the very next decision a better one.
That sounds simple.
It wasn’t.
For the first few weeks, he’d text me every Monday wanting to start fresh.
Every week we’d have the same conversation.
“You don’t need another start.
You just need your next decision.”
Slowly, something shifted.
A weekend became… a weekend.
One meal became one meal.
One missed workout became one missed workout.
His entire identity started changing.
Which brings us back to that Monday morning.
Five words.
“I didn’t start over today.”
What he was really saying was:
“I finally trust myself.”
I probably sat with that text for longer than I should’ve.
Because that’s what this work actually looks like.
It’s not always a huge transformation overnight.
Sometimes it’s a person realizing they no longer need Monday to save them.
By the way…
He’s lost over 30 pounds since then.
But that happened because he stopped starting over every week.
Not the other way around.
Much love,
Mackenzie
